Case study: Ahbstra ARK – Bringing a Sustainable Water Solution to Life
Prototype Projects worked with Ahbstra to produce a high-impact physical model of the ARK, a self-contained water generation system designed to offer an alternative to mains water delivery, producing up to 500 litres of drinking water per day. The model was created specifically to support investor engagement, helping Ahbstra clearly communicate the scale, design and intent of the product.
The ARK presents a compelling solution to a real infrastructure challenge, particularly in environments where water is scarce. Our role was to turn a digital concept into a tangible model that could support that story.
The Challenge
The CAD file supplied by Ahbstra had been abstracted from the full engineering design to make it suitable for visual renders. While visually accurate, it was not suitable for the production of the styling model.
The key challenges included:
- Modifying the CAD design so it could be manufactured and assembled reliably
- Ensuring the model remained visually true to the original render
- Producing a model at a size that balanced impact with practicality for investor presentations
- Offering flexibility by exploring alternative scale options
Our Approach
The project was delivered by members of our 3D printing and RP teams, with Luke, Adam and Tim working closely on CAD adaptation, production and finishing to ensure the model was both manufacturable and presentation-ready.
We produced the ARK model using SLA 3D printing in Matrix Clear, chosen for its smooth surface finish and suitability for high-detail display models. The final model was produced at a 10:1 scale, with overall dimensions of:
- X: 631mm
- Y: 308mm
- Z: 282mm
Once printed, the model was professionally finished and painted to represent the final product materials. This included wood-effect side panels, along with metal-finished top and end panels, giving investors a clear sense of how the ARK would look in real-world installations.
Throughout the process, we also advised on alternative scales, allowing Ahbstra to consider different presentation and transport requirements.
The Result
The finished model provided Ahbstra with a strong visual centrepiece for investor discussions. By transforming a render-focused design into a physical model, the ARK could be experienced in three dimensions, helping stakeholders better understand its form, footprint and materiality.
The model supported Ahbstra’s efforts to communicate the value of the ARK as a practical, scalable alternative to water delivery in off-grid locations, strengthening investor confidence and engagement.
Testimony
Zane van Romunde of Ahbstra said,
“The 3D model helps bring our product story to life. The Ahbstra ARK is a luxury product, so it was important for us to have a high-quality model that reflected the premium nature of our brand.
“Due to the amount of water it produces from air, our machine is impossible to take to prospective customers. The scale model produced by Prototype Projects is lightweight and easily transportable; perfect for taking to upcoming expos, conferences and launch events. Prototype Projects delivered the model to a tight deadline for the first such event, where it, and our novel technology, were highly regarded by the architects to which it was showcased.”
