Product Design Degree Student's 3D-Printed Model

Product Design student: Jack Lowe

Jack Lowe is in the final stages of his BA (Hons) Product Design degree with Sheffield Hallam University. Having spent his year-long work placement with Cambridge Design Technology, Jack also visited Prototype Projects and spent a few days with the team learning about the 3D printing technologies and seeing first-hand how 3D printing enables CAD designs to be brought to life.

For Jack’s final major project, he designed and developed the InfuStation which is a portable infusion pump and storage trolley to aid infusion therapy in the home. Jack wanted to create a 1:6th scale model which would demonstrate the trolley both in use in the home and whilst being transported.

Choosing a 3D printing technique

Jack chose 3D printing technique SLS for his model; complex shapes and high degrees of accuracy can be achieved with SLS. Jack said, ‘to achieve a high level of detail on such a small-scale model, 3D printing was the obvious choice.’

Jack uploaded his STEP files to the Prototype Projects’ website. Choosing from the wide range of materials and finishes available, Jack opted for white SLS Nylon with an S2 finish. Finally, Jack selected his delivery option.

He said:

“The parts arrived professionally packaged with a courier service which assured me that the parts were perfect. A bag of Haribo’s were also in the box which was much appreciated!”

Finishing the parts

Jack’s choice of SLS material meant he was able to sand and paint the model himself. He said:

“The SLS material was a great material choice as it adheres the paint very well. The finish of the parts out of the box was already great, but, as I had opted to hand finish the model, my choice of SLS material meant it was very easy to sand. The resulting surface finish was excellent.”

Jack continued:

“These SLS parts printed by Prototype Projects have really helped me to create a professional and high-quality display model for the university degree show. I received fantastic service from the Prototype Projects team, and I am very happy with the parts.”

Good luck from Prototype Projects

Managing Director, Justin Pringle, said,

“It was a great pleasure working with Jack while on his placement with Cambridge Design Technology. We were delighted when he chose to work with us for his final produce design project. On behalf of the Prototype Projects team, we wish Jack all the very best with his results!”
