Building connections in the digital world
All around the world, homes have become offices and social distancing is the norm. Taking a reciprocal step back to say hello is now the accepted (and expected) way to greet a friend, loved one or colleague. (Imagine the raised eyebrows you would have received if you’d done that six months ago!) The phone, email, instant messaging and video conferencing are being used much more than ever before, and those who really weren’t technically able before, are finding their feet. Zoom is their new best friend.
But in the world of business development, you could almost trick yourself into believing COVID-19 had never darkened our door. Almost.
Long gone are the days when a salesman, or business development manager, would drop in on a customer or prospective customer unannounced. Today, while the phone is still a go-to tool for communicating with customers, LinkedIn has become the place to be to make connections and stay in touch. And without the need to adhere to social distancing requirements, business life (in that sense) is as it was.
But there is a change, and we would be remiss for discounting it.
As Andrew Hayward, our Business Development Manager, reaches out to contacts old and new on LinkedIn, he asks “how’s business?” The responses he receives range from ‘as to be expected,’ to ‘it’s different, but we’re adapting’ and ‘my company is great, our safety is their priority.’
Yet while it could feel as if it were all doom and gloom, businesses are striving on. Are they thriving? Possibly not, for now, but there is the impetus to continue with business as unusual and new projects are underway.
We hope that you will be welcoming if Andrew happens to reach out to you. Establishing and building connections is business-critical right now – we’re sure you understand. Please do engage with him. We’re here to do business and Andrew wants to talk about your next project: what is it, what are the timescales, what are the financial parameters.
